Ban on social gatherings exclude marriage ceremonies - Mr. Oppong Nkrumah

Mr Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah,Minister-designate for Information, has clarified that the renewed introduction of a prohibition on social limitations as declared by President Akufo-Addo last Sunday, does exclude the restriction on wedding functions.

Instead, he says the social action of gatherings such as parties or receptions related with events, for example, memorial(funeral) services and wedding functions is the thing that has been restricted. Thus, he says, wedding functions, which are held in the chapels and mosques where there is an exacting adherence to COVID-19 protocols can go on.

Mr Oppong-Nkrumah gave the explanation on Tuesday at a press preparation on government COVID-19 reaction in the country.

Boycott once again introduced

President Akufo-Addo last Sunday once again introduced a restriction on every get-together, including weddings, burial services and others as a feature of intercessions to stop the flood of the Coronavirus in the country.

The mandate, as per the President, depended on information, which proposes that the flood in cases was because of non-adherence to preventive protocols at such parties.

Disarray

The President declaration has anyway set off conversations among certain segments of people in general.

Some have questioned why religious gatherings under strict protocols as prescribed and for two hours have been allowed but events such as funerals and weddings have been banned.

Explanation

Illuminating the President order, Mr Oppong-Nkrumah clarified that “the President did not say that marriages are banned.”

“The president did not ban burial service because the activity of burial, we actually encourage to go on… What is banned is the funeral where typically in the Ghanaian community we will all gather, shake hands, announcement of people, then they’ll call for a song, people will come and dance, where there is a little party associated with it. That is what has been banned,” he explained.

“In the same way, when it comes to marriage, what the president has said is that, what in Ghana we call wedding, the full-blown wedding where we have a big party with reception and people dancing and people eating, siting at reception tables, etc, that is what has been banned,” he added.

“We have got a lot of requests about so what if somebody is having a church service, which is allowed, and they choose to bless their marriage there as part of the church service. I’m not sure that is what has been banned. It is the wedding. The full-blown wedding with its reception and social activity associated with it is what has been banned,” Mr Oppong-Nkrumah further explained.
